Michael Stringer

(1924 – 2004)

Michael Stringer was born in Singapore and educated at Haileybury College. In 1943 he joined the R.A.F. and after training in Canada he qualified as a pilot and took part in the Rhine Crossing during 1945. Then in 1947 he joined Norman Arnold’s Art Department as a junior draughtsman for 2 years before becoming Assistant Art Director in 1949 and working on Bernard Mile’s ‘Chance of a Lifetime’.

He then worked as an Art Director on a string of well known films including ‘Genevieve’, ‘For better for worse’, ‘Casino Royale’ and many more.
Despite his busy career he still found time to publish two children’s books – ‘The Magic Carpet Adventure’ and ‘Baron Battleaxe and the Magic Carpet’. He also exhibited Film Designs in the National Theatre Exhibition of 1983.

Whilst being semi retired and living in East Sussex he created highly detailed paintings in both oil and watercolour which reflected his life in the world of films, combining reality and fantasy to great effect.
