Maurice Levis (1860-1940)

Maurice Levis was born in Paris on 11th November 1860 and he died in 1940.  He was a pupil of Harpignies, Jules Lefabvre and P. Billet.  Under these masters he soon matured into an artist of great merit.  He painted landscapes and figure subjects in France and with a very distinctive style became very well known in his own right.

He worked in both watercolours and oils and his style is interesting as he painted with some detail and yet there is a looseness of technique which is an influence from the impressionists.  He became a member of the Society of French Artists in 1888.  In 1895 he gained an honourable mention, in 1896 a Medaille de Troisieme Classe and in 1927 the Medaille d’Or.

Maurice Levis’ works are to be found in collections all over the world and are considered to be amongst the best examples of artistry of his time.
