George Lance

(1802 – 1864)

George Lance was a still life painter.  Studied under B.R. Hadon.  Exhibited in London 1824–64.  Mainly at the British Institute (135 works) also Royal Academy, Suffolk Street and the New Watercolour Society. 

He also exhibited regularly at the Liverpool Academy of which he was an Honorary Member. 

In 1836 he won the Liverpool prize for a historical picture, ‘Melancthon’s First Misgivings of the Church of Rome’. In addition to his many print and
still-life pictures, he also painted occasional historical genre scenes.  His favourite pupil and imitator was William Duffield.

After his death a sale of his work was held at Christies on May 27th 1873.
