Thomas Faed

(1826-1900)

Younger brother of John, his interest in art began at an early age and he followed the same direction of his brother. He started at art school aged
15 and painted scenes depicting the lives of the Scottish working class.

He was only 23 when named an associate of the Scottish Academy. He moved to London in 1852.His paintings were regularly exhibited
at the Royal Academy and the Tate Gallery bought one of his paintings deemed to be his finest masterpiece. He was elected an associate of
the Royal Academy in 1859 and a member in 1864 but was obliged to hand in his resignation as he felt he could not be relied upon to continue his
duties. He was virtually blind for the last 7 years of his life and died on 27th August 1900 in London.
