John Faed

(1820-1902)

Born in Kirkcudbright,Scotland. His father was a respected man in the community and four of his children went on to become distinguished artists.
John Faed taught himself to paint from the age of 12 and in 1841 went to Edinburgh where his work was very successful.

In 1847 he became an associate of the Scottish Royal Academy and an academician in 1857.In 1862 he moved to London where he lived until 1880.
His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy.He took the subjects for his work from the Bible and Shakespeare but mainly from stories in Scottish poems and songs. He died in the town of his birth in 1902.
