Antoine Bouvard

(1870 – 1956)

.

Antoine Bouvard Senior was born at St. Jean-de-Bournay in L'Isere in 1870.
He was the first of the internationally famous Bouvard family.  Born Marc Aldine, he changed his name to Bouvard. He was born in the late 19th Century and died in 1956, having spent most of his life in France.

He specialised in painting his beloved Venice, where he painted the quiet backwaters and canals, capturing on canvas in glowing, rich colour, the atmosphere of this unique town.  He was particularly taken with the iridescent quality of the morning sunlight and the softening tones of the dusk upon the water and old buildings.

His son, Noel Bouvard, continued the tradition, paintings up until death in the early 1970’s and since then his granddaughter, Colette, continues painting similar subjects to this day.

Antoine Bouvard’s paintings are of outstanding quality and there has been no artist more able than he of painting the water of the canals with all the lovely reflections and old houses.  He has received wide acclaim in Britain as well as in his native France.
